Introduction

This summit recognizes that (1) energy economy, (2) ocean economy and (3) sustainable, development are important inter-related areas of innovation and commerce that will drive the southeast U.S. to the future. The southeast region has the largest energy economy in the eastern U.S., and its energy innovation assets have high potential to make a large impact in domestic and global markets (Southeast Energy Innovation Collaborative). This region also has a strong and growing ocean economy that employed 397,000 people, generated $11.2 Billion in wages, and $25.5 Billion of gross domestic product in 2015 alone (NOAA).

This summit also recognizes that all three areas mentioned above are affected by challenges such as climate change, increasing demand for resources among others, in a way that energy-ocean-climate interactions must be understood and planned for. These are not only regional challenges but also global scale challenges that must be overcome. And, they must be overcome in a way that resulting achievements include locally applicable innovative technologies and social impact.

In recent years, many Atlantic region countries decided to address global problems to create local solutions. As a result, these countries have established a successful and prosperous network to share their science and technology assets to respond to these challenges together while addressing the intricacies of local needs at the same time.

At this summit, we will hear from the public and private sector executives and innovators of some of these countries located in the European Union, West Africa and South America. We will also have southeast U.S. speakers to discuss our region’s energy and ocean economies, and sustainable development plans.

Our goal is to explore multi-national collaboration opportunities in innovation and commerce within the three areas mentioned above, by starting high level talks between multi-sectoral and multi-national stakeholders in the private and public sectors at this summit. As a result, we hope to pave the way towards building a strong and lasting relationship between the Atlantic region countries and the southeast U.S. to support one another for sustainable growth.
